Advisor - Spoil

Purpose of the Role:

The Spoil Advisor is responsible for providing expertise and guidance on the management of spoil materials generated during excavation and construction activities. This role ensures efficient handling, disposal, or repurposing of spoil materials in compliance with environmental regulations and project requirements.

 

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of local and national environmental regulations.
  • Drivers’ License.
  • White Card.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 years of experience spoil management or environmental advisory roles within the construction or excavation industry.
  • Building strong working relationships with construction personnel, client and stakeholder representatives to achieve sound environmental outcomes

Required Competencies:  

  • Sound decision making abilities in line with environmental approval and management system requirements
  • Genuine commitment and proactive approach to spoil management and procedures
  • Effective analytical and written skills are required for this position.
  • Confident decision-making ability
  • Ability to collaborate with Project teams, environmental agencies, and stakeholders on spoil management strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional knowledge and ability in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

 

 

 

Core Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

 

 

  • Provide guidance on the efficient handling, transport, and disposal of spoil materials, including treatment, recycling, or repurposing when feasible.
  • Provide advice and support to the Project team(s) and sub-contractors to ensure implementation and compliance with statutory, FGJV and client Environmental obligations.
  • Communication of Environmental issues, standards, and procedures regarding disposal and administration of spoil.
  • Maintain accurate and organised records of spoil data, analysis, handling processes, disposal records, and environmental permits for Client and stakeholder use.
  • Implementation of Environmental Management Strategy, EMPs and subsidiary systems documentation.
  • Assist in undertaking of the Environmental Inspection and Audit Schedule and initiatives, regarding spoil including, but not limited to, Workplace Environmental Inspections and Internal, SHL & External Environmental Audits
  • Promote a dynamic and positive Environmental culture focused on achieving success.
  • Liaise with the area Environment Team and the Client to ensure they are aware of arising issues, requirements, and controls.
  • Provide guidance and training to project teams and personnel on spoil management best practices, emphasising environmental responsibility.
  • Ensure representation is maintained at key construction planning, Project coordination, and Sub-contractor coordination meetings.
