Clough, in consortium with Mistral Energy and Deloitte Australia (Deloitte Emissions Solutions Pty Ltd) have signed a collaboration agreement to develop and deliver 10 GW of floating offshore wind capacity built out over 10 years in Bass Strait and offshore Gippsland in Victoria, and additional options are being explored for offshore New South Wales and Western Australian sites.
The project is planned to be in 70-250m water depths distant from shorelines and recreational waters to minimise environmental and visual amenity impacts in Australia’s highest value wind resources.
The team behind Mistral has deep industry experience in offshore infrastructure and large-scale project development and project delivery in offshore contexts and they have adapted European floating platform technology tailored for Australian metocean and seabed conditions, using offshore wind turbines of 15 MW or greater.
Floating technology is already becoming a preferred option over fixed platform technologies as demonstrated by recently announced global projects where floating projects accesses higher wind energies and are more acceptable to communities in terms of visual impact, recreational coastal impact and seabed environmental impact.
Mistral’s floating wind generation projects will allow generation to be directed to onshore and offshore hydrogen production for industrial energy security and export applications. In addition, the project sees the opportunity for co-location of aquaculture and biodiversity projects as adding value to the differentiated positioning of Mistral Energy’s offshore wind farm development in selected offshore locations.
