Celebrating Melbourne’s next chapter in rail - With yesterday’s opening of the new Metro Tunnel, Melbourne has delivered its most significant rail upgrade since the City Loop opened more than 40 years ago, a milestone that takes us back to a defining moment in Webuild's own history.
Webuild's predecessor business helped shape the network we know today, delivering major components of the City Loop (formerly the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop), which opened in 1981.Read more here.
The scope included 11 km of tunnel excavation and lining, connecting:
- Parliament to Museum (now Melbourne Central)
- Museum to Flagstaff
- Flagstaff to Spencer Street rail yards
The team also built Museum and Flagstaff stations, multi-level underground structures reaching depths of up to 32 metres, and installed the sleepers and tracks that keep the Loop moving today.
The City Loop remains one of Australia’s most complex underground works, powered by the same engineering expertise driving Webuild’s current Melbourne projects: Suburban Rail Loop East (Tunnels North) and the North East Link Primary Package.
