Spark North East Link Tunnels D&C is powering change through an innovative Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), supporting the Project’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%.
The battery powered gantry crane uses regenerative drive technology to capture, store, and reuse energy generated during lifts. Designed in partnership with Energy Power Systems Australia (EPSA), the solution delivers cleaner, more efficient power on site while meeting rigorous technical and sustainability requirements.
This approach supports our decarbonisation targets and demonstrates that electrification is a safe, practical, and sustainable option for major infrastructure projects.

Webuild, as part of the Spark Joint Venture, is embedding sustainability and innovation across every phase of the North East Link project. Last year, the project achieved a PAS 2080 Accreditation, the first infrastructure project in Australia to do so. This globally recognised standard sets the benchmark for managing and reducing carbon emissions on infrastructure projects.
