Trackwork progress underground at SSTOM - Track construction on the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project continues to progress, with the use of Concrete Placement Units (CPUs) to deliver the permanent track slab inside the tunnels.
Each CPU is supported by a hi-rail concrete shuttle, pipeline, pump and finishing platform, forming a coordinated system over 200 metres long. On average, between 70 and 85 metres of track slab is completed each day, depending on the distance to the concrete delivery point. The hi-rail shuttle alone can travel up to 2 kilometres in either direction to maintain supply.
The system is operated by a day and night crew of up to 80 people, with concrete placed during the day and key servicing and logistics managed overnight to maintain productivity.
Working with sub-contractor Rhomberg Sersa Australia Pty Ltd, the team has created a tailored solution that reflects the scale and complexity of underground delivery of in-situ track slab.
