Every night, thousands of Australians experience homelessness, and every year the @vinnieswa CEO Sleepout helps raise awareness and funds to break the devastating cycle of homelessness. One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference. Donate to help those in need at www.ceosleepout.org.au.
For Carl Titchmarsh, who took part in the sleepout last night, it was a very cold and uncomfortable night.
“I took part in the sleepout because I wanted to contribute to helping people break out of the cycle of homelessness; a lot of people are living below the poverty line. Helping provide meals, temporary accommodation, counselling or even just a place to go to have a shower and wash your clothes can help with mental health and give people a chance to see a way out.
"The hardest part was listening to the stories from those who have recovered from homelessness and getting a chance to really understand the problem. Many are on the streets due to escaping domestic violence and have been working hard to make ends meet but the cost of living and rent is too high.
"What I took away from the sleepout was that sleeping on the hard concrete floor for one night is only part of experiencing this issue. I was not exposed to the mental, physical, and sexual abuse a lot of people go through and I went to bed with a tummy full of warm soup.
"Helping those on their journey out of homelessness is only part of the problem. We need to really understand how to prevent this becoming an option.”
